Irena Cristalis is a freelance journalist and photographer who has been working in Asia since the mid-1980s. She is now based in New Delhi. She has documented and reported on East Timor since the mid-1990s for international media like the BBC, The Economist and Radio Netherlands and is the author of Bitter dawn : East Timor - A people’s story published by Zed Books in 2002.
