The IDP database was established by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in 1998 at the request of the United Nations. Founded in Cairo in 1994 during the United Nations International Conference on Population and Development, Migrants Rights International (originally formed as the "International Migrants Watch Committee") is a membership organization comprised of experts and practitioners in the fields of migration and migrants’ human rights. Members are affiliated with nationally and locally-based migrant groups, human rights organizations, trade unions, religious bodies, and legal organizations in different parts of the world.
MRI operates with the support of a network of migrant associations, church-based organizations, migrant workers unions, and non-governmental organizations working on migration in Europe, North America, Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East.
